About

You've just arrived at the online residence of wandie and reika. The two of them are NO LONGER separated (but are still inseparable) by a vast ocean and two and a half continents. They NO LONGER need to communicate by shouting really loudly and occasionally writing each other hidden messages in this blog. Feel free to poke around and post some comments.

The IDF vs Hezbollah fight has thrown up quite a few surprises. From the abduction that started it all, to the neutralization of a high tech missile boat. And there are calls for investigations into the shortcomings.

Ah... the gastronomical round-the-world trip that one takes on the internet.

A review of an Italian restaurant in Bukit Timah by joone! on her wonderful foodie blog 'Nibble & scribble' had me look up Carpaccio on Wikipedia which led to the revelation that Langoustines are also sold as Norwegian Lobsters and Scampi (which I quite liked!) in other parts of the world. The carpaccio, essentially a raw beef appetizer, has a culinary cousin known as the Tartare which you might remember seeing in a nightmare you had about a 24hr Mr Bean channel. The tartare was so called because they were first introduced by Tartars aka Mongols aka the Horde, into Russia and subsequently popularized in Europe via German sailors from Hamburg. No prizes for guessing what the Hamburg version ultimately became to be known. That same Wikipedia entry also recommended reading up on a Middle Eastern version called the Kibbeh that's the national dish of crisis wrecked Lebanon. I also found out that the Kibbeh is commonly eaten with an alcoholic drink known as Arak that is distilled from grape juice.

Now wait a minute you say, that leaves us only in Lebanon. How are we getting back home? Well apparently, there's another alcoholic drink made from fruits, palm sap or sugarcane, with a similar sounding name known as Arrack right here in South East Asia! Tada!

by | § | trackbackWhat I learnt from the NEL outage

I first read about the service outage on the NEL this afternoon via Mr Wang's. A couple of things struck me.

1. The 'outpouring' of cynical potsots being taken by the commenters against the Gahmen in a scant few hours. Everyone from the MSM to MICA, the LTA and the PTC somehow got dragged into the conversation despite the fact that these establishments have quite possibly nothing to do with the outage. Just one comment was made concerning the welfare or safety about passengers that may have been caught in driverless trains affected by the outage. It seems that if you're a blogger that's perceived as standing up against The Powers That Be in Singapore, you can count on having a rabid fan base cheering your every keystroke. Even your retractions corrections! The hell with the suffering commuters!

2. How can you blame the MSM when the NEL operator SBS Transit has not as yet updated their website with a press release of any sort? And to top it off, it's mangling up it's own frontpage by regurgitating js source in my browser display as of 8pm SGT. Clearly our main transport provider has much to learn about information dissemination on the internet. The London Underground's Realtime travel news page would be a good start. It doesn't take much time to update a webpage, a ticker, or an RSS feed.

Update: SBS posted two PRs at approximately 8.30pm.

Some photos of our recently revamped reception at Y! South East Asia. It's nice and all but I do sort of miss the old sofa (advert plug is unintentional I assure you).
